What Lighting Really Brings to an Event

By Blake Delwisch5 min read

Lighting is one of those things people don’t usually think about until there is something to admire.

When lighting is done well, it truly brings people into the show or the environment being created. People walk into a show expecting it to look good, so when it does, everyone talks about the spectacle they just witnessed. But when it isn’t, people notice—because lighting significantly impacts how people view an event, and whether or not they want to come back.

Lighting Builds the Environment

Lighting is about creating the environment people walk into.

It’s not just a technical layer that gets added at the end, it’s part of how a space is built. Lighting works alongside audio, video, and scenic elements to shape the overall experience, not as something separate from them.

When I think about lighting, I’m thinking about how everything in the room works together visually. How the psychology of the colors will affect the attendees or how the lighting will help with the flow of the event, and what message we are trying to perceive.

At its core, lighting defines the space and supports everything else happening within it.

When Cornerstone built Monster Energy’s ASM stage set, lighting helped turn the objects on stage into something more than just set pieces. By emphasizing different elements at different moments, we were able to create multiple scenes using the same structures. What started as individual objects became a full city block with movement, depth, and a sense of engagement that pulled people into the space.

Lighting Creates Depth

You can have incredible scenic design, amazing video, and great audio, but if the lighting isn’t working, the show can feel flat.

If you just have house lights on, nothing is being emphasized. You start to feel like you are in a breakout room or conference call. Lighting is what pulls everything together and helps shape the show into something completely unique.

You can sync the lighting to the music beats, match the colors to the videos being played, use lasers to create intricate images, and much, much more— just to give a few examples. There is no limit to what lighting can bring to a show when done correctly.

Without intentional lighting, a production can start to feel like you’re just sitting there watching a screen...almost like watching a really well-produced movie. Lighting adds depth to the room. It separates the stage from the audience, gives focus to what matters, and helps people feel like they’re part of something instead of just watching it.

Lighting Isn’t an Afterthought

Every event is different. Some lean more concert-style, some more corporate, some being streamed or broadcast. All of that plays into what the lighting needs to do, which is why we work lighting in from the very beginning.

Since COVID especially, lighting must work not just for the people in the room, but for the camera too. This has always been the case though when filming. If it doesn’t look good on camera, it’s hard for people to want to watch it virtually.

When lighting is part of the plan early on, you can easily focus on the key elements like backlight, wash, key light, atmosphere, special elements, and keep building from there. You can start to think about how the room feels and how it will look, how people move through it, and how to create an environment without relying on traditional house lighting.

When lighting is considered from the beginning, that’s when you can really elevate a show and create something people will remember and want to experience again.

For a Young Living event held in a wide-open ballroom, we were brought in to create an Alice in Wonderland–inspired environment. Through intentional color choices and atmospheric lighting, the room took on that fantasy feel that wouldn’t have been possible with standard house lights.

Where Cornerstone Comes In

Each of our projects are planned, designed, and executed by people who understand how much it shapes the entire experience.

On my end, that often means handling lighting design, directing, master electrician work, rigging, video, audio — really whatever the show needs. I immerse myself in everything that affects the lighting atmosphere, which is the whole show, and I’m also constantly improving and working on new tricks, because understanding the full system is how you make better decisions, move faster, and make the show stronger.

That approach carries through our entire team. We know our gear, we stay current with technology, and we know how to use it to its full potential. The goal is never a generic setup. Our goal is to aim for really amazing, unforgettable experiences for you and your guests.

We’d love to create something incredible for your team. Reach out to learn more about what we can do for you.
